My interest in movement goes back to early childhood when I
began training in ballet and tap at the age of seven. By age
thirteen, my interest in body movement had transitioned to the
Martial Arts.
Over the next seven years, I studied Japanese Karate and was
involved with full-contact competition. Later, I studied Kung Fu
for seven more years.
Eventually, my curiosity and enthusiasm in the study of body
movement continued down a different avenue which led me to heavy
weight training. Over time, while involved in these different
activities, I accumulated many injuries.
My motivation to heal myself began 10 years ago. I was
suffering from chronic back and neck pain, bilateral elbow and
knee pain, and numerous complications from an abdominal surgery. I
was unable to lift weights, run, or do anything that was
physically demanding. As a matter of fact, it was even painful to
sit for long periods of time. The compression in my body that I
had acquired from all of the past injury patterns had severely
limited the activities I could perform in my daily life.
Following a period as a patient of physical therapy, I perused
Austin Community College's Physical Therapy Assistant Program and
Massage School, and graduated from both programs in 1993. It was
also in 1993 that I first met Judith Aston (founder of
Aston-Patterning®, 1977); she had a two-day workshop which I
attended. I then enrolled in her certification training, graduated
and was certified in 1996.
Since 1993, I have applied Aston-Patterning® to physical
therapy in hospitals and outpatient settings. Along with common
orthopedic and neurological injuries, I have worked with
world-class athletes and people dealing with fibromyalgia. At
present, I have a small private practice in which I work under
massage registration. I have also studied craniosacral therapy and
visceral manipulation to adjunct my work.
Each
injury pattern added more and more compression in my body. During
the Aston certification training, each session that I received
seemed to peel away a different compensation pattern. The work I
was receiving was removing unnecessary tension.

Therefore,
Aston-Patterning® can be thought of as a way of reclaiming
natural alignment rather than imposing an artificial posture over
existing tension. As a result of reclaiming my natural alignment,
I am able to return to the activities I enjoy, such as ballroom
dancing, weight training, and going for walks free of pain.
